  • The actor made his film debut with the Marathi film, Ghashiram Kotwal, which was based on a Marathi play of the same name.
  • Puri was born in Ambala, Haryana to a Punjabi Hindu family. His father worked in the Indian Railways and in the Army.
  • Puri attended the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune as well as the National School of Drama, where Naseeruddin Shah was a fellow student too.
  • During his filmy career, Om Puri has acted in movies in 8 different languages: Marathi, Kannada, Punjabi, English, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi and Urdu.
  • Om Puri has won several awards, including Padmashri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, 2 National Film Awards for Best Actor, Lifetime Achievement Award from International Film Festival of Prayag, Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to The British Film Industry.
  • He was one of the early actors, who, had made Indian cinema a contender for international recognition.
  • Om Puri made his international film debut in early 90s. Some of his noted work in British films such as My Son the Fanatic (1997), East Is East (1999) and The Parole Officer (2001). He also appeared in Hollywood films including City of Joy (1992), Wolf (1994) with Jack Nicholson. In 2007, he acted as General Zia-ul-Haq in Charlie Wilson's War, with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.
  • He had also featured in one of the biggest hits of 2016, The Jungle Book. He lent his voice for Bagheera in the Hindi version.
